Neighborhood Spotlight - Alamo Square

The inaugural neighborhood in my new series "Neighborhood Spotlight" is none other than the much sought after Alamo Square.  One of the premier Upland neighborhoods Alamo Square has a lot going for it.  I went on the search to find someone passionate about this neighborhood and was lucky enough to get a chance to talk with Choyna about his love affair with the square.  This is what he had to say.

So Choyna, that's an interesting name for your block explorer, how did it come about?

I wish I had a really fun or interesting story. But I was just perusing the ecryptionary one day a couple of years ago and came across the word 'choyna' which is an imitation of Donald Trump saying “China". I couldn't get it out of my head so I created an icon for it based on a parody of the Obama logo, it kinda stuck.

Wow, that's interesting, I didn't see that coming!  So how did you come to be so enamored with Alamo Square, was it just something in game or is there a back story there?

When my wife & I first emigrated to the US, we decided to embark on a half year road trip where we would never drive on an interstate. It was an amazing time! One of our favorite stops was San Francisco, and one of our fondest memories in SF was a day spent walking around the Alamo Square Neighborhood, admiring all the beautiful old victorian homes and enjoying lunch in the park located in the center of the neighborhood. In Upland, the neighborhood is small enough to be exclusive, but with enough properties to evolve into a true community. The neighborhood wraps around a large park which can be owned by all members of the community And finally the location, in the Heart of Upland.

That's a great story, a very rich history there.  So you are familiar with the neighborhood in real life, what do you think it will look like in Upland?

Last month, an anonymous survey was sent to all property owners in the Alamo Square neighborhood. Every residents voice was heard, regardless of how many properties they own in the neighborhood. The Alamo Square community decided resoundingly that our neighborhood will be primarily residential with a few boutique and locally run businesses.

What type of businesses to you expect in the area?

The results of the community survey suggest Alamo Square will be suited to cafés, galleries, bar, merchandise stores and realty agencies.

So where did you land in that group?  What do you plan to do with your properties?

First and foremost, Alamo Square will be my primary residence in Upland. I also plan to run a small business in the neighborhood, possibly an NFT gallery. I only bought a handful of other properties with the plan of utilizing them as promotional properties for players who missed the opportunity to be a part of our community, as well as donating them for use by the residents of Alamo Square. I was very careful when buying properties in Alamo Square to not buy up all of the best properties, but share the vision with all Uplanders and offer the opportunity to be part of Upland's first ever neighborhood community.

You have really thought this through, very impressive.  You seem really community focused, so do you see any properties in the neighborhood that would be a good focus for community?  Maybe a community owned lot?

Without a doubt it is the centerpiece of the Alamo Square neighborhood, Alamo Square Park. In real life it's a beautifully landscaped public park, and in Upland it's an impressive 5,721 UP2 property surrounded by the entire neighborhood making it an ideal community purchase which will be easily accessible by every member of the community, regardless of the location of their property.

Do you have any other dreams for the neighborhood? Maybe any specific initiatives?

My vision for Alamo Square is that every member has an equal say in the every decision that is made in the development and direction of the neighborhood. With this in mind, I'm very much hoping the development team will make possible a community governance system within neighborhoods in Upland.

So, what would you say to someone considering the neighborhood, why is it special?

If you are a community minded Uplander who is considering Alamo Square as your primary residence and/or a base to actively develop your small business, we welcome you with open arms and I will do my best to help you join our community. Alamo Square is the only neighborhood in Upland that was created with the sole purpose of developing our neighborhood, not as a result of the announcement by the team. Most plan to make Alamo Square their primary residence and almost all property owners in Alamo Square were residents prior to the 'property development hype', we purchased in this neighborhood with a vision to create a community together which is why I'm confident it will be one of the most successful neighborhoods in Upland.

Are there any iconic or historical things of note within the neighborhood that you would like to talk about?

Alamo Square is one of the most historic locations in San Francisco. In fact, Alamo Hill, was a watering hole on the horseback trail from Mission Dolores to the Presidio in the 1800s. In 1856, Mayor James Van Ness created a 12.7 acres park surrounding the watering hole, creating "Alamo Square". There are many historic Victorian and Edwardian homes in the neighborhood, none more recognizable than the world famous Painted Ladies which have been immortalized in many movies, television programs, photography and art.

Is there anything else about the neighborhood that you would like to mention?

Alamo Square is known as 'The Heart of Upland'. The neighborhood was the first ever community project in Upland and is the pioneer to a frenzy of other neighborhoods which will only strengthen the already very active and passionate community we have in Upland. We're all very excited for what is to come for the game, and for our beautiful neighborhood located in the center of San Francisco.

Thanks for your time Choyna!
What an amazing interview, this guy knows his stuff!  I don't know about you but I think Alamo Square sounds like a really great place to make a home.  Although they come with a steep price tag you may find yourself shopping for a spot in Alamo Square if this type of community suites you.
