Uppie Merge Drama - Who is to blame?

Take a deep breath before you hit the merge button.

Hello, Uplanders! The metaverse is buzzing with a mix excitement and as we hit a major milestone in our open-economy city-builder. Uppie Gen2 is officially live!

In this post, we’re breaking down the official merge mechanics, diving into some community feedback, and exploring the big questions about the future of our favorite digital residents.

The Basics: How Uppie Evolution Works

We have been told Uppies are more than just collectibles—they are evolving digital characters that can eventually be put to work in your Service Structures.  With that information we are left assuming that higher level uppies will give higher level boosts.  So, we are motivated to upgrade them through a merge.

The Merge Rules

To level up your Uppies, you must combine two Uppies of the same level to create a brand-new, higher-level Uppie.

  • Burn to Earn: When you merge, the two original Uppies are permanently burned (gone forever!) and replaced by a single, more advanced Uppie.

  • Leveling Up: Merging continues all the way to Level 10. Combining two Level 10s unlocks the ultimate prize: the Iconic Parody Uppie (IPU) at a special Star Level.

  • Sparklet Utility: Each merge requires a specific amount of Sparklet, adding a new layer of utility to our favorite resource.

The Generation Gap: Community Insights

While the official guide appears straightforward, our community has noticed some interesting (and sometimes surprising) nuances in how merging actually plays out.  To get into the details let's look at what they say, and importantly don't say in the article.  But first, let's get some naming details strait. For those that don't know, UFRST26 stands for Frost Season 2026.  We have been told in past articles new Uppies will come out each season and this naming indicates the season will be in the generations name.

Mixing Generations

According to the official docs, merging a Generation 1 (UORIGIN) Uppie with a Generation 2 (UFRST26) Uppie results in a random outcome based on the available inventory. You could end up with either generation.

The article leaves out any details about what happens when you burn two Uppies of the same generation?  The majority of readers took this to mean that two Gen1 will result in a Gen1, two Gen2 will result in a Gen2, and so forth.

This is the obvious subcontext, and for good reason.  If merging any two Uppies, regardless of generation would result in any generation they should have said that clearly.  Rather than sticking that detail specifically under the "Mixing Generations" sub-header.

We also don't know what happens when you have 3 or 4 or any number of generations. Will there be this giant pool of potential outcomes that none of us will know?

Many collectors have a voiced their take on how this should work. A common sentiment among long-time collectors is that older generations should be the most rare and protected. One idea circulating is that merging two Gen 1s should always result in a Gen 1, while mixing other generations could result in either.

My own personal opinion is you should be able to get only the most recent generation anywhere in the mix.  For example, if you merge a Gen 2 and Gen 4 then, at best, it would result in a Gen 4 to preserve the rarity of the earlier "O.G." Uppies.

The "Frosty" Surprise

Some players were caught off guard during the initial rollout. There were broad reports of players merging two UORIGIN (Gen 1) Uppies and receiving a Frost Season (Gen 2) Uppie in return. I have myself fallen prey to this particular predatory mechanic. This has sparked a debate: should the result be restricted to the generation you put in, or is it a "global pool" where anything can happen?

Looking Ahead: Open Questions

As we move into the Blossom, Genesis, and many other seasons, several questions remain for the Upland team to clarify:

  • Transparency of the Pool: Is there a way to see exactly what is in the "merge pool" at any given time?

  • Unified Pools: Are the Uppies found in the Discovery mini-game, store drops, and merge results all coming from the same supply, or are there separate pools for different activities?

  • Future Generations: Will we see a "Genesis Season" batch of Uppies soon, and how will they interact with our current collections?

  • Merge Warning: Does Upland owe their players an in game warning to say burning older Gen Uppies doesn't promise an Uppie of similar age?

Recommendations: How to mend the broken merge fence.

Let's talk about what should happen next and what can be done to fix it.  Obviously what's done is done.  You can't unburn what's gone.  You can't un-issue Uppies that have been sold post merge.  So we have to start from a place of logistically possible.

Humility: First off is to acknowledge to the community that the initial article was somewhere between unclear and very misleading.  It seems that what was written was broadly understood differently than the outcome.  Telling people they should have known because of the article is tone deaf to the community concerns.

Clarity: Give an absolutely crystal clear description of the intention of merge and how it will go once we see 3, 4, 5 more seasons of Uppies.  Make a significant effort to disseminate the information.

Transparency: Give the community a way to see exactly WHAT is in the merge pool at any given time.  This is NOT clear now.  You can see the unclaimed Uppies on Uppiepedia but we as a community do not know what that means?  Is anything unclaimed a potential for any drop, merge or minigame??? Nobody knows for sure.

Listen to the Community: There has been a clear community outcry for how they feel the merging should go.  It will be hard to change this, but it WILL improve the product for the long run.  We are only a couple days into this, what some might call mess. So clean up now will be so much easier than putting it off. So, here are my recommendations for getting it right for many years to come.

  1. Pause merge for now to get things right.
  2. Make merges of the same generation only give outcomes of that generation.
  3. Make a clear decision on mixed generation merges. Please don't let a Gen3 + Gen4 get something like Gen1 even if it's in the pool.
  4. Issue those that got UFRST26 Uppies from a UO+UO merge some form of restitution.  Either a Gen1 UO Uppie, sparklet, UPX, or something.
  5. Address all open questions from above.
  6. After ALL of that, re-open merging.

What do you think of the new merge mechanics? Do you prefer the "random pool" approach, or should Gen 1 Uppies be strictly protected?
